Suspense in Hamlet

In this essay I am going to explore the way that Shakespeare has written the play ‘Hamlet’ and also the devices he uses to create suspense. I will also try and analyse the dramatic impact the linguistic style and the devices have on an audience watching or reading the play.

Throughout the play, Shakespeare demonstrates the many qualities that Hamlet has. He demonstrates Hamlet as an intellectual character that uses words to fight his enemies. The fact that Hamlet uses a senile act, “To put an antic disposition on”, to fool his enemies proves that he is in fact an intellectual character. This would be a way that Shakespeare has thought to create suspense; the unpredictability of Hamlets behaviour is full of suspense. It leaves us thinking what will he do next, and where will this act get him later on in the play. He is different from the stereotypical view of a heroin. This presentation makes us as an audience conform to Hamlet. This is how Shakespeare has moulded our perception of Hamlet.

The ghost of Hamlets father appears to Horatio, Barnardo, and Marcellus twice during the night, it says nothing to them despite their valiant efforts to question it. This would be one of Shakespeare’s devices of creating suspense on the
