The game of basketball has evolved from a simple game started by throwing a ball in to a peach basket to the second most popular sport in the entire world. The pinnacle proving ground of the game is the National Basketball Association, which is regarded as the premier professional sports league in the world. The NBA has evolved to become the epitome of professional sports in the multi-media day in age. Players and teams are driven by marketing strategies and corporate funding and are earning millions of dollars each year. However professional basketball struggled to gain a foundation in North America in the early 20th century and continued to evolve as the game did concurrently through the years. Author Robert W. Peterson follows the evolution of the professional game in his book Cages To Jump Shots throughout the many changes in the rules and style in which the game was played. The author follows the game from it’s early beginning in the YMCA’s of eastern United States through to the implementation of the shot clock, which would drastically change the game forever.
