“On the cultural level, women have not been treated as men’s equals. Such inequality has evolved as an artifact of the preferences and actions of patriarchal authorities (termed scripturalists here) after the Prophet’s death, including certain rulers and administrators, most jurists, and some intellectuals” (Hoffman-Ladd 323)No subject intrigues me more than the status of women in the more-so patriarchal society of the Islamic community. Women have always been lower than men in Islamic society. There are many examples throughout history. For instance, men had the control over the marriage, the divorce, and family life. Many rules throughout the years of Islamic society, there has been many rules in order to keep women at a lower state than men. Issues such as veiling and education gave the men another step of power over the women. Women weren’t looked upon as equals until later into the Islamic era. They weren’t that much equal, but had more rights based the moral responsibility for their actions. They had more power over their life and how to deal with it.
