“In literature as in life, a character may set a high personal goal. In some ways, such a personal goal may be vary valuable and result in a better life. In other ways, such a goal may make life difficult and result in suffering.” I agree with this quote. Somebody’s personal goal can make life better in one way and also make it more difficult in another. One character in which suffers and fails but also achieves a better living through his goal is Jay Gatsby from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. He is a perfect example of a man who sets his personal goals and suffers a great deal because of them but also improves his life. The other character who fits this quote would be Daisy. Daisy is another character who achieves her goal and a better life but also because of this goal suffers in her life too.

Gatsby achieves his goal of being rich in the novel. His fortune lets him live a better life than what he grew up to. As James Gatz he grew up on a farm in the Mid-West with little to no money. When he achieved his goal as Jay Gatsby he bettered his life he was rich like he always wanted to be. He had multiple cars, a giant house, and plenty of material things filling that house.
