Reality

Humans, due to their nature, often overlook or ignore reality. Circumstances may

cause shock to people who must face a crystal clear picture of a reality they refused to previously acknowledge. Mama, Armand, and Eveline seem to focus on their own perception: one that illustrates mans continuing absence of clarity, perception of reality, and understanding of situations in which they find themselves.

How we view reality in a certain situation is not always the outcome we anticipate. Because of the absence of clarity, Mama did not accurately interpret what reality would be until her daughters had approached young adulthood. She feels that Dee is the one with all the personality and most likely to succeed. She daydreams about “…TV shows where the child who has “made it” is confronted, as a surprise, by her own mother…” (65). On the contrary, Maggie has a timid personality and she’s scared of Dee.
