Buchner’s ‘Woyzeck’ is a unique play as it does not show the struggle of the smart upper class character, as in other plays such as Romeo in “Romeo & Juliet” and Othello in “Othello”; it depicts the notion of the working class man and his struggles through social ridicule. The Captain does have a rather large influence on Woyzeck, as he is the one who spelt out that Marie was being dishonest in scene IX, and he also is constantly telling Woyzeck how to live his life “You always look worked up. ... ” (Buchner Woyzeck 1836 – 37 [scene I])

In the beginning of the play, we first see the connection between Woyzck and the Captain and more predominantly the Captains morals and his view on life and Woyzeck as a person. The Captain has a world of wisdom and knowledge and he enforces his views onto Woyzeck. In the opening scene we see that the Captain displaying a great deal of authority and domination on Woyzeck as he is shaving him. Throughout this scene we constantly see the Captains disapproval of the way Woyzeck is using his time “Not so fast, Woyzeck.
