discussion of an appropriate time to harvest a standing forest This was an essay question for

Discuss an appropriate time to harvest a standing forest.

In early forest management theory, the “appropriate” time of harvesting a standing forest will be that which maximises the total quantity of wood. ...

To maximise the quantity of wood per harvest is simply to let the forest grow until the time it reaches the peak volume. This will be determined by the time at which its annual increments (rate of change of volume) reaches zero. Harvesting at such time will obtain the maximum quantity of wood per one rotation. ... In this case the quantity maximising time will be where the annual increment reaches its maximum, and mathematical modelling suggests that, if the two functions are plotted together on the same axis, then this time will be located where the mean annual increment intersects the annual increment, and the quantity of wood over a series of rotation will be maximised.

Unfortunately, the maximum quantity of wood is rarely what the profit-seeking forest managers are looking for. Faustman (1989) realised that the problem will also involve the accounts of revenues and costs varying with the harvesting time. By using the tools of calculus and estimating the functions of costs and benefits, Faustman was able to solve for the harvesting time which maximises the monetary profit from the sale of wood.
