Phillip Morris decided to acquire Kraft in 1988 a full three years after the acquisition of General Foods. Kraft was seen as “extremely complementary” to General Foods and did not have “significantly overlapping brands” that would allow for larger market share on a larger scope of products. Kraft and General Foods were unfortunately similar in the same negative manner that plagued General Foods before their acquisition.
