Vengeance is one of the most destructive emotions in the community of Salem and it is essential in bringing about the final tragic events of the play.
Vengeance is one of the key factors causing many innocent people to lose their lives in the play ‘The Crucible’ based on the 1692 witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts written by Arthur Miller. However, there are many other reasons that caused the mass hysteria within the Salem community including the lack of common sense, the lack of compassion, fear and the community’s strong belief in witchcraft. ... She also knows Abigail has accused her of witchcraft because of Elizabeth blackening her name within the community. ... The fact that people were accused, convicted and then hung for reasons like their pig dying is extremely ridiculous and shows how brainless the community of Salem was. ... If the court had any common sense at all, vengeance would not have the power to conceive and cause the death of so many people.
However, vengeance was not the only reason why lots of people lost their lives during the witchcraft trials. When Abigail accuses Tituba in Act 1 it is through fear and has nothing to do with vengeance. ...
