I believe that incidents such as this and all other forms of street harassment must come to a halt to enable the progress of women in our society. Street harassment, you ask? It may be a new term to some of you, but it’s really just a subdivision of sexual harassment as a whole. I define street harassment as sexual intimidation on the street, in the forms of whistling or other noises, obscene sexual remarks, offensive stares, and at its extreme, physical sexual abuse. ... In degrading and embarrassing women, street harassment is yet another one of the many manifestations of male supremacy in our society.
Street harassment comes in many forms. It could be a lady walking down the street past a crowd of young men. ... The forms of street harassment are numerous, but each of them are equally disgusting. ... Spousal abuse forces us to live as secondary citizens, sexual harassment at work tells us that we are not to be part of the economic world, and street harassment prevents us from fully enjoying public spaces. ...
I’m sure most of the girls here have received a honk from a passing motorist or a “hey baby” from a man on the street. ... It appalls me that some women can let themselves be objectified this way, and it saddens me that their self confidence is so low, that they are validated by jeers and stares on the street.
