... One of the most difficult and controversial issues that we are faced with is abortion. There are many strong arguments both for and against the right to have an abortion which are so complicated that it becomes impossible to resolve. ... Since the proportion of people who accept abortion as a ‘normal’ procedure is equal to the proportion to those who believe abortion is a crime. Although abortion has been examined through scientific and religious perspective, in this paper I will try and examine abortion from an ethical point of view.
The abortion debate begins with the moral status of the fetus. If the fetus has no moral status, something to distinguish its destruction from that of a toenail or appendix, then it is no more justifiable to restrict abortion than to restrict appendectomy. If the fetus is a being with rights, then abortion doesn’t just concern the freedom of women, since personal freedom is constrained by the rights of others. The most prevalent argument that the fetus has a moral status disallowing abortion is:
s A fetus is a human being. ...
s Therefore, abortion is unethical, since it constitutes the deliberate destruction of a human being. ... Their theory may facilitate the explanation and persuasiveness of one or any of these views on the morality of abortion. ... Therefore, someone should be concerned with the amounts of pleasure and pain in situations where abortion is permitted as contrasted with the amounts of pleasure and pain where abortion is forbidden. ... Not only can its future life be expectedly happy, it might also be the case that the abortion itself is painful, particularly if it occurs later in the pregnancy. However, this focus on the fetus is unwarranted since any suffering involved in the abortion itself can be avoided by simply aborting the pregnancy sooner, in order words, before the fetus has even developed the capability of suffering.
