Medical modelpsychology
The basic assumption of the medical model · The medical model believes psychological abnormality (like brain damage and genetically inherited illness) is a sickness and uses terms like syndrome, prognosis and in remission. · The belief that hen we think about abnormal behaviour we think it is a sign of underlying illness. · They argue that it is more humane to regard a psychologically disturbed person as sick or mad rather than bad. · However, when a person is labelled sick or ill we are removing all responsibility from them for their behaviour. We don’t hold someone responsible for cancer so mental illness implies that something has happened to that person. Evaluation:- · While it may be considered more humanitarian to care for people in hospitals than to torture them for witch craft there is a sense that their past practises were more honest than some of the current abuses of psychiatry.
