Character Assesment of King Lear King Lear, as the title of the play would suggest, plays an integral part in the play. He is one, if not the, main character. King Lear appears throughout the play and is in both the first and last scene. During the play King Lear displays many characteristics as well as having a few dramatic changes in his character. Right from the beginning of the play we see that Lear is a strong, stubborn and sometimes rash, man. ... This first scene shows us many characteristics of Lear for a start we see his obvious rashness in his decision to banish them. We then see Lear’s stubborn side when he refuses to give Cordeilia anything, “Nothing I have sworn I am firm”. ... We also see an unexpected side of Lear in which he shows himself to be quite self centred, when asking his daughters “Which of you dost love us most. ... The final characteristic Lear shows in this scene is his arrogance in which he completely dismisses Kent’s argument “Out of my sight!
