The heir arrives and initially things remain status quo for our sweet Desiree. ... Desiree’s world is blown apart by something beyond her control. ... Then I read the story a second time, and realized that it wasn’t just Armand who betrayed me, Desiree had also. ... In my initial reading I had, almost instinctively, sided with Desiree. ... However, Desiree’s reaction to her bi-racial son was just as cruel and inhumane as Armand’s actions to her, the same actions that had so infuriated me. ... This same response can be seen later in Desiree’s letter to her adoptive 2 mother, “My mother, they tell me I am not white.
