Memory refers to the mental processes that enable us to acquire, retain, and retrieve various types of information. Memory is not one process; it actually involves three fundamental processes. ... (Butter & Delis, 1995) The process of transforming information into a form that can be entered and retained by the memory system is known as encoding. ... The process of retaining information in memory so that it can be used at a later time is known as storage. Storing the encoded information is a very important fundamental process because if we do not store the information that we encode, our memory system will never be able to actually retrieve the information. ... Without these three fundamental processes, it would be impossible for the memory system to operate. So how do we show all the aspects of the human memory system? The most widely accepted theory known today is the “Stage Model of Memory” based on the work of Atkinson and Shriffin (1968).
