John Rae was born in Scottland on the wind swept Islands of the Orkney in north Scottland in 1813. ... In 1843 Sir george Simpson requested Rae to join him in Luchine for Christmas to discuss Raes first Arctic expidition. ... Rae was very wise and watsed no time at all in starting to train to be ready for his expidision, he decided to get a head start and snowshoed 700 miles back to Moose Factory. ... On this exploration of the north coast fo the continent he traveled north along the Hudson Bay coast to Repulse Bay and over to Rae Isthumus, into Committee Bay. ... When Rae got there he discovered that it was not an is land at all but was a penninsula, making all the theories that the Northwest Passage existed in that area to be false. ...
