In the Old Statistical Account of Scotland dating from the 1790s the Parish of Old or West Monkland was according to the Reverend John Bower, 10 miles long and 3 ½ miles in breadth. ... When the second or New Account was published the boundaries of the Old Monklands were basically the same but the population had now increased to 9580. The main industries in the 1790s had been farming but by the time the second Report was published this part of the Monklands was witnessing its own Industrial Revolution with the main industries now being coal mining and producing iron.
