OTHELLO’S VILLAIN Iago is a brilliant character. He took advantage of the trust that Othello, Desdemona, Cassio, and Roderigo had in him and used this trust to get into, and therefore manipulate, their minds. Because of Iago, there was destruction of a marriage (between Desdemona and Othello), three murders (Roderigo, Desdemona, and Emilia), one suicide (Othello), and one person injured (Cassio). Throughout the whole play of “Othello,” he shows no remorse for the suffering that he has caused. ... Here Iago exposes that he hates Othello. ... He’s going to spend all of this time just to cause hurt upon Othello. ... Here, Iago is expressing his suspicion that Othello has slept with Emilia, his wife. ... He is aware of the fact that Othello trusts him. ... Iago is trying to figure out how to hurt and plot against both Othello and Cassio. “After some time, to abuse Othello’s ears/That he is too familiar with his wife. ... Iago has decided that he is going to instill in Othello’s mind that Cassio and Desdemona are involved. |
