Christian Robinson Portfolio Biography Mahatma Gandhi Gandhi, also know as Mahatma Gandhi, was born in Porbandar, now known as Gujarat, on October 2, 1869. Gandhi attended school at University College in London, where he was educated in law. After college Gandhi returned to India, were he attempted to establish a law practice in the country of Bombay, now known as Mumbai, though he had little success. Two years later Gandhi was obtained as a legal advisor for an Indian firm interested in the country Durban, which is located in South Africa. When he arrived in Durban, he found that his race was treated very poorly, and then put himself into the struggle for elementary rights for Indians. While remaining in South Africa for 20 years, Gandhi was imprisoned many times, and in 1896 he was attacked and then beaten by white South Africans. After this act Gandhi began to teach the policy of passive resistance, and noncooperation, with the South African authorities. There were a few people who influenced Gandhi to begin this policy. One of them was the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who profoundly influenced Gandhi.
