19th Amendment
The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution reads: “The right of the citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex. ... The new generation of suffragists, led by Alice Paul and Carrie Chapman Catt, concentrated on a Constitutional amendment granting women the vote. The “Anthony Amendment”, as it was known, was introduced in Congress three times between 1878 and 1917. ... Finally, President Wilson came out in favor of the Anthony Amendment. The day after Wilson’s declaration, the amendment passed the House of Representatives. In June of 1919, the Senate approved the Anthony Amendment. ... Eight days later the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution became the law of the land, and in the fall of 1920, millions of women registered to vote in their first nationwide election.
