Marcel Proust was born in 1871 in Auteuil, near Paris. Marcel’s birth was during the same time as the modernizing of France. During this time the boulevards were beginning to widen, modern buildings were being built, and automobiles were appearing on the streets. Marcel Proust’s father, Adrien Proust, was a Catholic medical doctor. Adrien Proust was also a professor of the Faculty of Medicine. Marcel Proust’s mother, Jeanne Weil, was a Jewish stockbroker. Marcel had a closer relationship with his intelligent mother, who he loved and depended upon. Marcel’s father died in 1903 and his mother died in 1905. Having wealthy parents provided Marcel with a very privileged upbringing.
