Mahatma Gandhi as A Servant Leader
The definition of servant leadership, according to the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership, is “the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. ... The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served.” A person who exemplified servant-leadership during his life was Mohandas Gandhi, or better known as Mahatma Gandhi. ... Gandhi coined the term satyagraha to signify his theory and practice of non-violent resistance. Gandhi conceived of his own life as a series of experiments to forge the use of satyagraha in such a manner as to make the oppressor and the oppressed alike recognize their common bonding and humanity: as he recognized, freedom is only freedom when it is indivisible. ... There were primary principles that guided Gandhi in carrying out his many political actions, including selflessness, the training of people to be self-sufficient, and respect for all people. Gandhi carried out his beliefs and convictions without thoughts of personal gain. ... Of those he chose to serve, Gandhi believed that they needed to able to help themselves and set up programs and facilities for their education.
