The Purpose of War in 1984 The society that George Orwell portrays in the novel 1984 is rigidly controlled by a totalitarian government who does not even allow creativity or individual thought in its people. The Party has many methods to control the masses, and one of the tools it uses is war. War in this society is not the struggle to defeat another power to obtain territory or impose your ideology. ... “The object of waging a war is always to be in a better position in which to wage another war”.
