The Shakespearean work, Macbeth, is considered a dramatic tragedy. It is a serious play that represents the downfall of the central character, Macbeth. The play is an epic battle of good verses evil. Darkness in the primary characteristic of evil while light symbolizes the good. Macbeth is filled with a struggle between light and dark. Shakespeare employs the imagery of darkness by using words, actions, and descriptions of people to describe instruments of disorder and the evils characters act upon.
In Macbeth many acts of evil and deception happen during the night. Darkness is a tool that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth use to lead them to execute their evil acts as well as hiding their evil doings. In the beginning of the play darkness is simply portrayed as a blanket to cover up the bad deeds. However, as the play progresses, darkness evolves into a personality that plagues every character. This evolution is evident in the deeds of Macbeth during the course of the play.
In Macbeth the witches are a prime source of darkness. The place and time of the witches’ meetings all take on the feeling of darkness. ... From the conditions and the location that the witches meet, a feeling of evil and darkness is already created. The appearance of the witches also adds to the feeling of darkness. Macbeth describes them as, “secret, black, and midnight hags! ... Banquo also refers to the witches as instruments of darkness saying, “The instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest triffles, to betray’s in deepest consequence. ... The image of darkness directly effecting Macbeth starts off when he meets the three witches who tell him a prophecy that he will soon be king of Scotland, “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter! ... Also, it is the first time darkness is portrayed as being something natural. ... After pondering, Macbeth realizes that he must do something himself in order for the prophecy to come true.
