The question to all readers is, “Was Gatsby all that great?” Two different critics present their views on Gatsby and his effect as a major character and protagonist in the novel. Robert Ornstein states, “Gatsby is great, because his dream, however naïve, gaudy, and unattainable, is one of the grand illusions of the race which keeps men from becoming too old, or too wise or too cynical of their human limitations. ... Gatsby is a boor, a roughneck, a fraud, a criminal. ... ” I agree with Ornstein, Gatsby is relatively a good character. Although Scrimgeour makes good points concerning Gatsby and his behavior, I feel as though Gatsby is neither all good nor all bad. ... The reason Gatsby feels as though he was put on the earth was to be with Daisy. ... Gatsby owns everything materialistic and has everything a man could dream of…but he doesn’t have love. To fulfill his emptiness he holds large extravagant parties in the hope of Daisy attending and being impressed on all of his possessions and soon enough realizing her love for Gatsby. Jordan even sees the corrupt motivation behind Daisy seeing Gatsby. ... Jordan is explaining why Gatsby wants Nick to persuade Daisy to join him for tea.
