... There are many different types of injuries in recreational sports. Types of activities that cause injuries, prevention of injuries, diagnosis and treatment of injuries is a major topic of current research.
According to Austermuehle (2001), the largest and most complex joint in the body is the knee. ... Doctors and researchers are beginning to call knee injuries the new epidemic in the sports world (Orr). Bach (1997) states that within the past 15 years, ACL injuries have increased in almost epidemic proportions. Austermuehle (2001), also states that the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most commonly injured knee ligament. ACL injuries may result from nearly any type of sports activity that involves deceleration or change-of-direction forces (Bach). Much research has been done on which sports have the greatest occurrence of ACL injuries. ... According to Moeller and Lamb (1997), three causes of ACL injuries are: planting and cutting, straight-knee landing, and one-step stop landing with the knee hyper extended. ... And, Austermuehle (2001) says that ACL injuries can result from either acute trauma or overuse.
Females are at a higher risk of ACL injuries than males. According to the NCAA, female basketball and soccer players have a significantly higher incidence of ACL injuries than males (Moeller & Lamb). And Ostenberg and Roos (2000) state that although the injury rate is about the same, the injury pattern seems to indicate that an ACL injury in female soccer players is more common than in males. Girls are four to six times more likely to have a knee injury than boys (Orr).
