The Decline of Feudalism
The system of feudalism depended on a number of factors such as a set social hierarchy with obviously different stages. ... With these events and aspects combined, feudalism began to breakdown as it was no longer relevant and had little place in society. Under this double impact, the decline of feudalism is also often linked with the crusades.
Feudalism was the system which is best represented by a pyramid, with the king on the top, and is defined as a class of knights and nobles who held their lands in return for military service, with inferior tenants working on land along the same basis. ... The isolation of manors was also an important factor, as it was in these small manors where feudalism was the most effective. If the manors shrank in size, feudalism would cease to exist.
Although the major causes of feudalism are the Black Plague and introduction of new methods of warfare, it is also necessary to look at the crusades as a main contributor to the decline of feudalism. ... The crusades caused the production of goods to rise in demand, which triggered events and actions which, although not entirely responsible for the decline of feudalism, they events would certainly contribute to feudalisms downfall.
The Black death and plagues of Europe caused the population of all communities affected to decline rapidly. ... So with fewer living in manors and small villages, the system of Feudalism could not operate as well as before. Feudalism occurred mainly in theses manors, so with many less of these, feudalism began to slowly move away. This is also linked to communication – an increase in communication lead to the isolated manors no longer being isolated, and as a result, feudalism would gradually no longer work as well.
