Humans vs. the Others

Why is it that all heterosexuals are treated equally, and homosexuals are denied basic rights such as marriage? Equal rights for homosexuals is one of the most divisive and contestable topics in the United States. Robinson claims that "because marriage is a basic human right and an individual personal choice, the State should not interfere with same-gender couples who choose to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities, and commitment of civil marriage (1)." Being gay is not a choice therefore New York should legalize marriage among all people, including those who are gay. There are two sides to the issue: those who are in favor of same sex marriages and those who oppose. Those who are in favor argue that everyone should have equal rights, marriage laws can be altered just as others have been, and homosexuals can be high-quality parents and start families just as well as heterosexuals. Oppositionists contend that homosexuals will take marriage for granted, marriage is for two people of the opposite sex, and gays cannot produce children without a third individual. If gays do not care if their children are natural, then why should we? Homosexuals are human beings, and they ask for are equal rights that they are not receiving. Although heterosexuals are not legally allowed to marry into their own immediate families if that was the desire, that does not mean that homosexuals should not be able to marry who they want. Any rational person who wants to have children would not marry into immediate family with the risk of mental disorders or birth defects. Also, homosexuals are not asking to commit incest. Just because they live a different lifestyle than the majority of America does not mean they are sick people. It is not their fault that they love another person of their same sex. Emotions are not in anyone’s control.
