Feminism

Before reading “I’m Not a Feminist, But…” by Penny A Weiss, I would have responded the same as she did when first asked the question of “Are you a feminist?” I would have gone through my long list of beliefs of yes I am for equal rights on social, economic, and a political level, and I would have added the “but” in the middle of my sentence saying but, I am not an activist. I was unaware of the many things that feminist fight for and believe in. I know what the stereotype of a feminist is said to be, but that is not why I was scared to say that I was a feminist. When I say that I am unaware of the multiple things that feminist around the world are fighting for, I mean that. Penny Weiss listed several concerns that I was clueless about. Or, I knew of the need for concern, but I didn’t know how it related to being a feminist, and how feminist are fighting to stop theses things from happening. Fighting for equal rights now means to me, equal rights in every aspect of my life. I want to be able to challenge a boss that sexually harasses me, leave my abusive husband. So many actions that women want to take have been labeled unacceptable because society sees it as radical.
