Thomas Benton Cooley is the American pediatrician that Cooley’s Anemia is named after because of the work and study that Thomas put into this disorder (“Cooley‘s Anemia. ... Cooley’s Anemia is a serious disease, and defected genetics are the central cause of it all. Also, Cooley’s Anemia affects a human’s body in several ways that can lead to death. Lastly, a few treatments have been created to try and stop Cooley’s Anemia from being fatal in humans. All of these facts come together to form an enemy of the human race, Cooley‘s Anemia. Cooley’s Anemia, Thalassemia Major, is a disease of the blood that is carried by a defected gene (“Encarta 99” 1). Cooley’s Anemia is the most severe, homozygous form of beta thalassemia; people’s hemoglobin does not produce enough beta protein (“About Thalassemia” 1). It mainly occurs in infancy, and is caused by the inheritance of a recessive trait responsible for the interference of hemoglobin synthesis in the body (“Cooley‘s Anemia” 2001.
