Describe and illustrate some of the ways in whichthe English language can be used tostereotype men

... It has been recognised that sexism is present in English vocabulary and grammar. Feminist writers argue that the language we use in England reflects the way that we live in a patriarchal society and that it also helps to fortify and perpetuate sexist attitudes, ensuring that these manners are passed on from person to person and throughout generations to come. Although language is changing and there is increased awareness of sexism, I believe that we do still live in a patriarchal society. In this essay I will be exploring different aspects of sexism in the English language and how these help to reinforce gender stereotypes. ... It is said that to an extent the existence of sexist language is simply a reflection of the way society is: some people have sexist attitudes and that is why there is sexist language. However, in line with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, it is also argued that the existence of sexist language helps to perpetuate and reinforce sexist attitudes.

To some extent language does shape our view of ourselves and of society. ...

When looking at adjectives that are used to specifically to describe men or women we can see how the language that we use reinforces gender stereotypes.
