Written by Naguib Mahfouz, the story of Zaabalawi concerns a man looking for a saint, named Zaabalawi, to cure him of his incurable illness. During his quest for Zaabalawi the narrator, or main character, inquires with several different people within the city of Cairo, Egypt, to help him find this mysterious saint. ... Although little is known about this character throughout the story, Mahfouz does a great job in letting the reader know a little about the main character through his thoughts and actions.
The first thing that the reader might think about the narrator after reading the story of Zaabalawi is, Who is he? ... One assumption might be that the character might not know himself that well to give himself a name yet. ... Although we are not given the name nor physical description of this character, we are given some clues as to what this character is like as a person.
On the narrators quest for Zaabalawi, the narrator meets with many people in the community that have heard of this mystic saint and that may aid him in finding Zaabalawi. ... This timidness is also evident when he goes to meet the calligrapher to ask him about Zaabalawi.
