In the two poems ‘Mr Bleaney’ and ‘Whitsun Weddings’ Larkin presents his attitude towards the individual in society shows people to be reduced to types by the need to conform and the pressures imposed. ... In the early years the society was anti- feminist and therefore women had to look ‘right’ to achieve any success. This was not an arguable issue at that time as society had conformed them into this and pressure was imposed by the dominating male society.
Larkin also shows that individuals are trapped. ... Mr Bleaney is trapped in this way of life and that society is preventing him to be any different and he hides his true feelings inside. ... ” Girls had to be married to have any partial success and therefore, were in a way forced into marriage by society.
