In the Well-Tempered Clavier, Bach took the idea of a Prelude and Fugue to new heights. Before this, it was understood that the prelude simply could not stand alone by itself without being followed by the fugue. Each prelude and fugue in this volume can stand alone separately and can therefore serve as an individual concert piece.
As for the layout of the piece, it serves us well, I believe, to create groupings of measures where every four measures are grouped into one large measure, with exception to a group of three from m.
