Sammy s Mistake

In John Updikes "A & P", Sammy displays his immaturity by walking out on his job without putting any thought into it, which a responsible adult would never do. Sammy leaves his job for many reasons. He wants to impress the girls by being their hero, leave his boring job, and never admit that he is making a mistake. The most evident reason Sammy quits his job is that he wants to impress the three girls. After the girls were scolded for being underdressed by Lengel, the store manager, Sammy says, “‘I quit’ to Lengel quick enough for them to hear” (579). ... Updike proves this by stating Sammy’s thoughts after he quits, “. ... Sammy doesn’t think before he acts. ... Sammy’s immaturity overwhelms him.
