Odyssey Essay

The Odyssey, an epic poem by Homer, is a poem that is greatly impacted by the Gods. The many Greek Gods present in this poem play a huge role in influencing the characters to do many of the things they do. Particularly, Odysseus and Telemachus are influenced and guided by the Gods. The many Gods in this poem help guide Telemachus and Odysseus throughout their lives. The Gods protect them and influence the choices they both make. Without the many Greek Gods, the lives of all the characters in this poem would be extremely different if not taken away. In The Odyssey, the Gods play a very important role by both helping and acting as a hindrance towards Odysseus and his son, Telemachus throughout the journey of life. Throughout The Odyssey, the Gods influence the choices of both Telemachus and Odysseus. Athena, the Goddess of wisdom, planned/structured battle and womanly arts helps influences their choices more than any other God. At the start of the poem, Athena, disguised as Mentes, influences the decisions of Telemachus. She urges Telemachus to, “think how to drive these suitors away” from his halls (86). The suitors are trying to marry Telemachus’ mother, Penelope. Also, they have taken a liking to Odysseus’ home and treat it as their own place. The suitors do not respect the feelings of the people that really live there. A second way she influences Telemachus is by advising him to, “Fit out a ship with twenty oars, the best in sight, sail in quest of news of your long lost father.”(86).
