Outline: Solitary Confinement Topic: Solitary Confinement General Purpose: To Persuade Proposition: Solitary Confinement is an inhumane and dangerous policy that should be modified, especially for the untreated severely mentally ill and all those that will re-enter society with out any kind of rehabilitation. Specific Purpose: After listening to my speech, audience members should agree that solitary confinement is inhumane, especially for prisoners who are severely mentally ill, as well as a policy that is dangerous to our society as a whole. ... There is a growing trend toward maximum security prisons where solitary confinement is the accepted way of doing things. At one time solitary confinement was used only as a punishment within the regular prison system (known as “the hole”). Today, however, solitary confinement is being touted as the best way because it is the most economical way, to confine prisoners. ... Today people convicted of petty theft, possessing small amounts marijuana, and even innocent people wrongly convicted, are just as likely to be incarcerated in super-max prisons where solitary confinement has become the growing norm.
