By using such bold, bright colors, such as blue, green and yellow, Monet clearly depicted the spotted patterns of light and shade on the seated figure and boat, the strong sunlight coming from the visible village, and the reflections of the calm river. From previously studying Monet in high school, I know that the woman sitting near the river is Camille Doncieux, initially Claude Monet’s model, then mistress, and then his wife. Monet painted Camille enjoying a wonderful day, looking across the river from the town of Bennecourt.
