Holding Things Together The story "Holding Things Together" by Anne Tyler, demonstrates a problem that is common in many relationships. In the story, it is the problem that Alfred and Lucy have that is demonstrated so well. Lucy feels that she is the one that is keeping things "together". In a way Lucy feels that she is the "man" in the relationship, and that she has been this figure since they moved in together. Lucy uses one main comparison throughout this story, that is her car, and her husband, Alfreds car. Lucy speaks of her car as if it is a child of hers.
