The event described above is regarded by many to be the end of the Plains Indians way of life. ... This essay will be specifically looking at the role of the U.S. army in the destruction of the Plains Indians.
Based on the facts I know my opinion is that the US army played the biggest part in the destruction of the Plains Indians. I think this because I know that the US army wanted the Indians exterminated rather than given a permanent reservation. This was because people that were migrating to America needed that land that the Indians occupied for settling
To begin with it is essential to explain why the American Government wanted the Indians off they land they had given them. From the 1840’s onwards the Indians were seen as a problem that needed to be fixed. The Plains Indians occupied land that was wanted by ranchers, settlers and miners. The American people felt that the Indians were in the way of the United States’ ‘Manifest Destiny’. ... There were people hat wanted to negotiate with the Indians. ... Some Western people also wanted to negotiate with the Indians, including the Indian agents that had learnt to understand the Native American way of life. These ‘negotiators’ believed that the use of force against the Indians would only make matters worse. The negotiators also believed that Indian affairs should be kept with the Bureau for Indian Affairs and not with the US army.
