... I’m Gary Holmes and today’s discussion is on the ever-growing genre Crime Fiction in written and film texts. ... Today I’m presenting view on the opening 10 minutes of a film and the opening chapter to a novel and how they are significant to determine what they reveal about the texts genre, the protagonists, and the values and nature of its world. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, a Genre is a kind, type, style or category of, novel, film, characterized by a particular form or purpose. ... Now the few that I’ve focused on for the base of my discussion today is- · The 1946 film adaptation of “the Big Sleep” written by Raymond Chandler · David Guttersons novel- ‘Snow falling on Cedars’, written in 1994 & · Agatha Christies- ‘Why didn’t they ask Evans? ... For instance, The Big Sleep-after watching the first ten minutes of this film, we are able to sense almost straightaway that it is going to be a dark and paranoiac film, full of suspicion dread and intrigue. Behind the opening credits we see a silhouetted couple light cigarettes and then leave them burning in the background. ... In the opening sequence, an unidentified hand and finger press the doorbell buzzer of the mansion doorway. ... Now from the very start we see the nature and true character of the protagonists just from the first ten minutes and by picking up the different values and putting them into context has a big impact on our understanding of any text!
