He wrote during the Restoration period, which dates from 1600 to 1800 (Elements of Literature 466). During this era, the primary goal of literature was to expose excesses and moral corruption. Alexander Pope started his career as a poet writing poems that describe rustic life and countryside in idealized terms, which were called pastorals. Alexander Pope was born in May in the year of 1688 in London, England. In the year 1700, Pope’s family moved to Windsor Forest where, five years later, he begins to be acquainted with London literary figures. Pope published his first poem on May 2, 1709, called Pastorals. In 1711, Pope published two more works, which were called An Essay on Criticism and The Critical Specimen. In addition, in that year and the next Pope contributed essays to The Spectator. On May 20, 1712, he publishes a two-canto version of The Rape of Locke. In addition, this year he became acquainted with Gay, Swift, Arbuthnot and Parnell, or also known as The Scriblerians.
