A Historical View of Idaho Falls

In Idaho Falls around 1930 there were only five houses from Ammon Road to Holmes Avenue. These roads were unpaved, of course, and it was rare to see two vehicles on the road at the same time. In the summer children ran barefoot, picking potatoes and other crops by hand. In the winter they would use snow skis and build snow caves and underground fortresses. Such was the life for one woman, Deon Cook. Deon was born and raised in the Idaho Falls – Ammon area. When asked of her childhood, Deon tells of weekly trips to town, her interaction with nearby train operators, and old-fashioned courtship. Every Saturday the entire Cook family would climb into their old Chevrolet and go to town for the day.
