Between a Rock and a Hard Place “Now Mr. [Hale’s] returned, there is hope, I think-for if he bring even one to God…. unconfessed and claiming innocence, doubts are multiplied, many honest people will weep for them, and our good purpose is lost in their tears.” (Miller 128) We see this quote appear as Mr. Parris grows in desperation to have Proctor and Rebecca Nurse confess to being witches. In Salem, the population is becoming afraid of the witch-hunt, as so many have already been arrested. The Salem community is beginning to strongly doubt that any evil from the Devil is loose in Salem, but they do fear the evil of the court.
