CAREER REPORT Matthew Harrison Intro to Rec. Agency: Whitewater Challengers Host: Marc Brown Title: Guide coordinator Duties and Responsibilities 1. To Recruit, train, and schedule guides and kayak instructors for rafting trips and kayak clinics. This also includes being in charge of the training trips in the spring. 2. In charge of the guide house, where the guides stay while working. This includes gathering firewood for the wood stove, keeping it clean, and the upkeep of supplies needed. 3. In recruiting guides, responsibilities include putting ads in papers, making phone interviews, and sending out information to potential guides. When guides are in training they get a guide manual to learn procedures and requirements of becoming a guide, Marc contributed to the writing of this manual. Upon completion of the guide training a guide is required to pass the in class, guide orientation course. He is the instructor of this course, making sure every trainee has the appropriate knowledge and skill to become a successful river guide. 4. Organizes first aide courses for the guides. He schedules instructors for the courses, makes sure the supplies needed are at the course, and sends the records in to the American Red Cross upon successful completion. 5. Composing a guide schedule every week. Putting groups of guides together that will work well together. Deciding which guides are fit to work different sections of the river. 6. Turning in the guide payroll every two weeks. 7. On river responsibilities include river maintenance, which is the removal of hazardous strainers, and certain projects that will help keep the river safe. Also on the river Marc guides, trains new guides, and teaches kayak clinics. 8. End of the year responsibilities include making up a final guide newsletter, and finding out what guides intentions are for the following year. Then he makes a schedule for the following year to hand out to all guides. 9. Towards the end of the year the company has a trip to a different river, this years was to the Ottawa. Marc is involved with the planning and scheduling of the trip.
