After that the first known person to own the Hope diamond was a French merchant traveler named Jean Baptiste Tavernier. He purchased the 112 3/16 – carat diamond in India in 1668. Tavernier sold the diamond to King Louis XIV of France later on that year. But before the sale of the diamond to King Louis the diamond was cut to measure 68 1/8 – carat in size.
