Tattooing is an art form wrapped deep in tradition and history and spanning many cultures and societies. ... But what has kept this art from alive? Why do people see the need to alter their body in such a painful way? ... Superstition, vanity, and social deviance have been linked to the motives of the art, and there art just as many explanations for the meanings of the tattoos them selves. ... In 1887 German Anthropologist Wilhelm Joest published his studies of the motivations of tattooing in his book Tattooing, Scarring and Body Painting: A Contribution to Comparative Ethnology. Joest studied Native Americans, Asians, and Indonesians first hand and suggested that the art was an act of vanity not superstition (Joest 13). Joest stated that although in all the cultures he visited the actual process of getting the tattoo was related to ceremony. The need for the art is “more closely related to the intimate association of the sexes (Joest 35).”
In 1925 anthropologist Wilefird Hambly, while acknowledging the significance of the work by Joest, countered the belief that tattooing was purely vanity driven and went on to say that there was a closer relationship between the art and magical powers. ... Tattooing was supposed to: prevent pain; protect against gunshot wounds; cure illness; preserve youth; enhance the supernatural powers of a shaman; identify the soul in the afterlife; attract good luck; protect against witchcraft; ensure the protection of a god; exorcise demons; record a pilgrimage to a holy place, and there are many more ideals (Hambley 146-9).
