In Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl”, she uses many different strategies to create a persona for the speaker. ... The only other references to females are “slut” and “girl”. While I read “Girl”, the examples that I mentioned above drastically effected how I felt about the speaker, and the piece as a whole. ... In some instances, she would offer reason why the girl she was talking to shouldn’t do those things. ... To me, it seemed like she was doing all she knew to care for this girl coming up after her in the same position. ... At the beginning, I saw the speaker as an old hag who was taking her bitterness out on some innocent young girl, but as a read deeper, I saw her in a completely different light.
