odour of Chrysanthemums DH Lawrence

Odour of Chrysanthemums

The opening paragraph of Odour of Chrysanthemums sets a dismal tone to the short story. ...

The language that Lawrence uses is depressing and even threatening in places but never exciting. ... Lawrence’s use of the definite article when referring to the locomotive engine suggests a degree of importance attached to it. This suggestion is then reinforced by the additional detail that Lawrence furnishes the reader with when he comments on it being “Number 4” and by telling the reader that it had “seven full waggons”. ... Lawrence goes on to describe the locomotive engine as heavy and slow, he reinforces this idea about the engine by giving the sentence a heavy, slow rhythm.

In contrast to Lawrence’s treatment of the locomotive engine the woman walking up the path is made insignificant by Lawrence’s choice of language. He uses the indefinite article to introduce her and portrays her as passive in her actions, she “drew back into the hedge” and “held her basket aside”, and finally Lawrence describes her as “insignificantly trapped”.
