One of the most popular hobbies of all is that of sports. Most American Universities grant scholarships to gifted athletes, allowing them to receive a free education. These scholarships are valuable because athletes are given the opportunity to participate at an extremely competitive level, in the sport they love and excel in, while receiving an education at the same time. However, there are reasons to believe that sports scholarships do more harm than anything else. Scholarships can be seen as negative for a number of reasons: they take away an athletes love for the game, too many politics are involved, the competition takes away from a normal childhood, and in the end, the best interest of the athlete is not considered.
One of the negative aspects of sports scholarships is the elimination of the pure enjoyment found in the game. There used to be a time when athletes played sports because they loved the competition and the camaraderie involved. ... Athletes are lured into the idea of receiving a sports scholarship, and lose focus of the real reason that sports are played, for pure enjoyment. Being made to believe that the only important goal is being the best player, going to a good sports school, and eventually making money as a professional athlete, is what throws promising young athletes off track.
